You may not be aware of this but the so called “little things” within our homes can quickly add up in regards to energy consumption. We have all done it! Left the light on when we leave for work in a morning. The light is left lit all day until you arrive home from work. This in itself creates a large amount of energy consumption. Another major factor we all are aware of is leaving our appliances on standby rather than turning it off at the plug. All these little things are large factors for contributing to energy consumption within our homes. By alleviating these “little things” you can in-fact make a large impact at helping our environment!
Other helpful tips include:-
- Turning off lights whenever and wherever possible. Take advantage of sources of natural sunlight within the home.
- Unplug appliances when not in use. Not only does it save energy, but is also extra precautionary in regards to electrical fires.
- Take advantage of the weather. Many of us get in the habit of keeping the home air and heating units on regardless of outside weather temperatures. Open windows and doors whenever possible to reduce energy consumption.
- Replace all the standard light bulbs throughout your home for the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)On average compact fluorescent bulbs use about 75% less energy, produce 75% less heat, and last about 10 times longer in comparison to standard bulbs. Also CFLs can be used indoors or outdoors. They can dramatically improve conservation outdoors because most leave outdoor lighting on overnight or most of the night via a timer. They can also be used in conjunction with protective fixtures to shield extreme temperatures and inclement weather.
